Tofu Sambal

Tofu or most commonly known here as Tauhu, is bean curd and I may have mentioned before that I love tofu in almost any form. Besides the paneer burji, tofu sambal used to be the most requested dish my office colleagues in the UAE used to ask me to make. When they tried it for the first time, they literally freaked out ‘cos they had never had it before.

So I would make it the night before and bring it to the office the next day and just as I would enter the office, I would announce I have brought tofu sambal and they would not even wait till lunch time – try it without even heating it, straight from the Tupperware!

I am sure they are missing me and my tauhu sambal very much. So, my dear friends back in the UAE, do try and make it and I hope it turns out good 😊.

Ingredients

  • Tofu/Tauhu – 1 piece, cut into cubes and pat dry
  • Onion – 1, sliced
  • Dried red chilli – 10 pieces
  • Tomatoes – 2, chopped
  • Salt
  • Sugar (optional)

Method

  • Soak the dried red chilli in hot water for about 15 mins and grind to a paste.
  • Heat some oil in a wok and shallow fry the tofu till light brown. Remove from pan and set it aside.
  • In the same oil, saute the sliced onion for couple of minutes till light brown.
  • Then add the chilli paste and cook in low flame till oil separates.
  • Add the tomatoes and cook till pulpy and you may add half a glass of water if you don’t want it too dry.
  • Add salt and stir well. If you find it very spicy, adjust with a little bit of sugar.
  • Now add the fried tofu and stir till well coated.
  • Serve hot with plain white rice or eat it on it’s own 😊
